There was an age, not to long ago when Baile Funk was king. The grimy and sample friendly club music from the deep ghettos of Brazil was on everyone’s playlist—especially mine. But then the major push makers of the movement went to different directions. M.I.A. went to Africa, Australia, and India for influences, Bonde do Role’s lead singer quit the band, and CSS (Cansei de Ser Sexy) seemed to drop from the face of the planet. But CSS hadn’t totally vanished; they were hard at work on their sophomore album.
On their new video “The Rat is Dead”, they went back to the grime—well more like the sewers. They decided to do indulge in the new indie obsession of making one hot videos. But they fail because the concept is nothing special. No choreographed dance sequences like in Feist’s “1,2,3,4” and no plot lines like Vampire Weekend’s “Oxford Comma.” It’s just the band playing the song and Love Foxxx jumping around. But who knows, it’s just my opinion and I could always be wrong.
